Mercedes-Benz AMG G-Class G63 2025

Mercedes-Benz AMG G-Class G63 2025

The history of the G-Wagon dates back to the late 1970s when it started conquering the world, winning the hearts of every automotive enthusiast. From rally race victories to army transporters, the G-Class has seen and done it at all levels. The G-Class has undergone an amazing evolution, showcasing stunning displays of craftsmanship and technical innovations. With an impressive history, the new G-Wagen models, the G63 and G550, continue to hold a special place in the hearts of car enthusiasts.

Recently Mercedes-Benz released, the Mercedes-Benz G 550 has once again attracted attention with its impressive powertrain changes and elegant, boxy silhouette. It closely resembles the iconic 1979 original Spartan's design, which is absolutely immaculate. It commands attention wherever it goes. However, what sets it apart is its extreme customizability, with a plethora of available options, and its six-figure price tag.

The new Mercedes G-Class G550 flirts with ultra-luxury territory but doesn't quite cement its place among the big names like the Ferrari Purosangue and Bentley Bentayga. Its off-roading capability is unquestionable; however, the on-road handling is not up to par for ultra-luxury vehicles. Furthermore, the G 550 leans more toward being a luxury adventurer than a sophisticated SUV.

What’s new in Mercedes G-Class, 2025?

The 2025 Mercedes G-Wagen comes with several changes from its previous 2024YM iteration. You can notice subtle yet distinct alterations in its grille and front bumper. Despite maintaining the iconic boxy shape, the roof's leading edge features a small spoiler addition, which will improve aerodynamics to some extent. The exterior is beautiful from every angle.

The German automaker has chosen to replace the V-8 engine with a 3.0-liter inline-six and a 48-volt hybrid assist system. This change has resulted in modifications to the power and performance of the vehicle. Additional changes can be seen in the updated and enhanced MBUX Infotainment System and interior elements. Apart from these changes, the 2025 G550 has largely maintained its original features.

Interior Components & Technical Elements

The G 550's interior is ideal for five passengers, with ample headroom, legroom, and shoulder room at the front and back. It offers a decent amount of cargo space: 34.8 cu ft. The infotainment system features updated software and offers comfortable and plush seats.

The new G-Class inherits a lot of interior elements from its previous model, including the finest upholstery, three-zone climate control, a power-adjustable steering column, an optional sunroof, and massaging heated and ventilated seats, among many other features. It also retains every technical aspect of the 2024 G 550 with some minor enhancements.

Cabin Aesthetics

The G550's cabin aesthetics feature a bold fusion of rugged luxury and contemporary sophistication. It comes with the classic G-Class design elements, featuring grab handles, round vents, and upright seating arrangements. Both the standard leather and optional Nappa upholstery, adorned with intricate detailing, are available.

Spacious interior settings, refined luxury, and several levels of optional refinement possibilities make this 2025 G-Class Wagon an aesthetically pleasing SUV. You'll get to enjoy a powerful drive and a lavish ambience with this G550—perfect for the money it costs.

Infotainment & Connectivity

The G-Class features a near-vertical digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment system. The updated MBUX software underpins the digital aspects of the G550. The optional Burmester stereo system from the 2024 model has become a standard feature in the new G 550.

The rear seat will get an optional 11.6-inch MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment System suitable for web browsing and video streaming. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation have found places in the G550's system. Mercedes Me Connect allows you to remotely control the various functionalities of the G 550.

Safety and Driver-Assistance

The 2025 G550 inherits a lot of standard features of the 2024 variant, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, speed limit assist, self-parking assist, and lane-keeping assist. The new model also comes with some enhancements to the active steering assist, emergency stop assist, and active brake assist. You won't find many new elements in the latest model; however, enhancements are obvious from the previous model.

Under The Hood of Mercedes-Benz G-Class

As we mentioned earlier, the new G 550 comes with major changes under the hood. An inline-6 turbo engine replaces the V8. This means the new G-Wagon will no longer have the iconic sound of the V8. However, it makes up for it with power and performance.

Powertrain & Engine

The 2024 G 550 featured a 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine that produced 416 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque. The new model uses a 3.0L inline-6 turbo with hybrid assist and an electric auxiliary compressor. It boasts even more power and torque: 443 hp and 413 lb.-ft. The introduction of MHEV in the 2025 model assists the overall performance. However, the hybrid assist is incapable of independent functionality.

Drive Type & Transmission

The same All-Wheel Drive (AWD) drivetrain remains in the new G-Class as does the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission. The triple differential locks (front, center, and rear) and low range still remain intact from the previous model.

Acceleration & Real-World MPG

Despite the change in power, the inline-6 and V8 have matched the rest in terms of acceleration. The new G550 does 0 to 60 MPH in 5.3 seconds, which the 2024 G550 also did. Both of the models lag behind by 0.2 seconds when compared to the 2019 G 550.

There is an improvement in the fuel economy segment compared to the 2024 model. The EPA rate of 13 mpg in the city increased to 17 mpg, and the highway rate of 16 mpg increased to 19 mpg. The primary cause of this increase is the replacement of the power plant. The inline-6 turbo is much more fuel-efficient than the V8 biturbo.

Towing and Payload Capacity

However, the towing capacity has significantly increased in the new model compared to the 2024 model. The new model boasts 7716 pounds, while the previous version has a maximum towing capacity of 7000 pounds. 2025 G-Class G500 supersedes the towing capacity of the similarly equipped Cadillac Escalade and a larger Mercedes-Benz GLS580.

Mercedes-Benz G 550 Trims & Pricing

The Mercedes-Benz G550 comes in a single trim. However, it offers several additional packages for customization and exclusivity. All G550s have the same base; only the packages differ. The German automaker has offered 10 different packages with the new 2025 G-Wagon. Each of them will add cost, offering more exclusive and optional features. Here are the packages you can choose from for your G-Wagon.

Mercedes G550’s rank in the Ultimate Luxury SUV segment

Car and Driver ranked the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G550 below the 2025 Mercedes-AMG G63, 2025 Mercedes-Maybach GLS-Class, and 2024 Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. The Mercedes-AMG G63, 2025 Mercedes-Maybach GLS-Class, 2024 Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, 2025 Aston Martin DBX, 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, 2025 Lamborghini Urus or Urus Hybrid, 2025 Bentley Bentayga, and 2025 Ferrari Purosangue also sit above. Purosangue leads the list, with Bentayga and the others trailing behind in reverse chronological order.

It doesn't quite have what it takes to compete with the likes of the Bentayga and Purosangue in the ultra-luxury SUV segment. Regardless, it requires significant effort to secure the ninth position among the top SUVs currently available.

Final Verdict: Top G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G 550 is an amazing German creation that displays an exceptional blend of craftsmanship, ingenuity, innovation, luxury, and performance. It still has room for improvement in terms of premium luxury. However, it still cuts into the ultra-luxury segment. It is quite expensive as well. Overall, the G550 will beautifully represent your demeanor, status, and success, turning heads everywhere you take it. The only thing you will miss is the V8's iconic sound.
